Haines City, Florida - He was known as a friendly physical education instructor, someone who loves people and his country.
Charlie Lewis served two tours of duty in Iraq and came home to his wife and children in Haines City to be a teacher. It seemed to be a natural fit for the 31-year-old local war hero to start working at Landmark Christian Church and School. After all, his family attended services there.
However, no one was expecting what happened next.
Lewis was arrested Wednesday by detectives with the Haines City Police Department, accused of having an ongoing sexual relationship with an underage girl who was a student at the Christian school where he coached.
It turns out, the girl's pastor says, Lewis had known his alleged victim since she was a toddler.
"This is very sad," said longtime Pastor Mickey Carter. "Her family goes to my church; so does his."
Lewis was working as a physical education instructor back in 2011. He wasn't considered a staff member, says the pastor.
"He was doing an internship. He did a pretty good job."
That is, until people started noticing what sources call disturbing behavior.
"Some of the other teachers noticed he was acting like a teenager and paying special attention to one young woman, even carrying her books to her car," said Pastor Carter
The pastor ended Lewis' internship immediately, he says, adhering to his strict zero-tolerance policy at the Christian school. The Pastor even called the girl's parents and told them what was going on at the campus.
"They assured me Charlie Lewis was a family friend. He knew their daughter since she was 2 or 3 years old," he said.
That was in May 2011.
In August of that year, the young woman turned 17 and allegedly began a sexual relationship with Lewis until August 2012. She is now 19 and came to Pastor Carter in tears several days ago to confess.
The pastor says, "She was very emotional and felt it was her obligation to come forward with her parents."
The pastor then called the police chief. Since the girl was 19, it was now up to her to press charges. And, she did.
Lewis was arrested at his place of employment Wednesday, a local air-conditioning company. While his wife would not answer the door at the family's Haines City home, the woman's uncle spoke with 10 News.
Charles Harrison told us, "How would you feel? I'm shocked. He's a great guy- worked hard. I don't know. I don't know what to say."
Lewis remains in the Polk County Jail without bond.
This isn't the first time the Landmark Christian School has made headlines. Just over a year ago, a secretary at the school was arrested and accused of having sex with one of her son's friends who was a student at the school.
