NEWARK, Del. — Two people were shot in Newark, Del., Wednesday morning after a rifle discharged during a party.
New Castle County Police went to a shooting call around 1 a.m. A witness reported an 18-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man had been shot.
An investigation found a party was going on when a 16-year-old asked to look at a rifle, police said. Conor Wing, 19, handed the rifle to the teen, and when it was returned to him a few minutes later Wing loaded it and it discharged.
The bullet struck an 18-year-old woman in the chest, exited and hit a 23-year-old man in the hip. Both victims were transported to Christiana Medical Center by ambulance.
The man has since been discharged, while the woman remains hospitalized and is listed in stable condition.
Detectives charged Wing with two counts of assault in the first degree, two counts of reckless endangering in the first degree and reckless endangering in the second degree. He is awaiting arraignment.
