CLEARWATER, Fla. - A small plane crashed at St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said.

Robert Brandon, 67, of Pensacola, took off in the single-engine plane, reported a mechanical issue with his plane, then tried to land but crashed onto the grass near runway 36, located on the north side of the airport, at about 1:19 p.m., authorities said.

Brandon, who was the only person in the plane, was taken to Bayfront Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, the sheriff's office said. His condition was not immediately available.

The FAA and the NTSB are investigating the cause of the crash.
