The shooting of a unarmed black man during a drug bust will be investigated by the State Attorney's Office in another jurisdiction, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday.
Hillsborough County State Attorney Mark Ober recused himself from the Levonia Riggins case, citing social connections with the family of the deputy who was involved.
"The Sheriff's Office wants to assure the Riggins family, the community of Clair Mel and the citizens of Hillsborough County, that the Sheriff's Office will fully cooperate with the appointed State Attorney and allow the facts and the law to dictate the outcome," the sheriff's office said in a statement.
Riggins, 22, was fatally shot Aug. 30 during a drug bust in Clair Mel by Deputy Caleb Johnson, who said Riggins reached for his waistband. The shooting has sparked protests and calls for Johnson to be arrested.
