FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- More than 10,000 Sunshine State taxpayers have unclaimed money - and the IRS is trying to find them.
The government is looking for 10,024 Florida taxpayers who are owed a total of $15 million. The checks were returned to the IRS by the U.S. Postal Service due to mailing address errors.
"In Florida, the average undeliverable refund is $1,538," Mike Dobzinski, IRS spokesman for Florida, said in a statement. "We'd like to get this money back to taxpayers...All we need is an updated address and we can reissue the check."
According to the IRS, nationwide, 107,831 refunds totaling $123.5 million were returned to it.
Taxpayers can find out if they are due a tax refund by visiting the IRS web site at and clicking on "Where's My Refund." Enter 2008 tax return information, including a Social Security number, filing status and refund amount. Taxpayers will get the status of their refund check and further information if necessary.
Taxpayers also can call 1-800-829-1954 for instructions on updating their address and getting a check re-sent.
The IRS ADVISES taxpayers who move to file a Form 8822, which is a Change of Address form. That's available on the IRS web site at or by calling 1-800-829-3676.
