FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- More than 10,000 Sunshine State taxpayers have unclaimed money - and the IRS is trying to find them.

The government is looking for 10,024 Florida taxpayers who are owed a total of $15 million. The checks were returned to the IRS by the U.S. Postal Service due to mailing address errors.

"In Florida, the average undeliverable refund is $1,538," Mike Dobzinski, IRS spokesman for Florida, said in a statement. "We'd like to get this money back to taxpayers...All we need is an updated address and we can reissue the check."

According to the IRS, nationwide, 107,831 refunds totaling $123.5  million were returned to it.

Taxpayers can find out if they are due a tax refund by visiting the IRS web site at  and clicking on "Where's My Refund." Enter 2008 tax return information, including a Social Security number, filing status and refund amount. Taxpayers will get the status of their refund check and further information if necessary.

Taxpayers also can call 1-800-829-1954   for instructions on updating their address and getting a check re-sent.

The IRS ADVISES taxpayers who move to file a Form 8822, which is a Change of Address form. That's available on the IRS web site at or by calling   1-800-829-3676.
