TAMPA, Florida - The ex-husband of the teacher accused of having sex with a 14-year-old Hillsborough County student says she was being treated for mental problems at the time.
Debra LaFave has avoided prison time by pleading guilty to having sex with the boy in a classroom and at her home.
Her ex-husband, Owen LaFave, spoke on CBS's "The Early Show" and said it's a double standard that she doesn't have to go to prison. He said she is a sexual offender and if she were a male, she would've gotten jail time.
Debra LaFave will serve three years of house arrest and seven years of probation. She has lost her teaching certificate, must register with the state as a sexual predator, can't have any contact with children including the victim, and won't be allowed to profit from the sale of her story or personal appearances.
The plea agreement also was designed to resolve similar charges in Marion County where LaFave is scheduled to appear in court December 8th.
