Toddler run over by S.U.V. as mom is distracted by phone

A video showing a toddler being run over by a S.U.V. as her distracted mother looks at her cell phone has captured the world's attention.

According to a report in the New York Times, the video has spread on Chinese social media as Weibo users discuss the "the perils of overusing smartphones."

The 2-year-old girl, identified as Tutu, is seen in the video taken from surveillance footage in Yueyang, Hunan, China walking alongside a parked S.U.V. with her mother following behind her. The mother is shown staring intently at her cell phone.

WARNING: This video contains graphic footage.

A driver gets into the S.U.V. and turns on the vehicle as the toddler approaches the passenger side door.

The mother stares at her phone, but looks up at the same time as the girl makes a hard left turn in front of the vehicle. The S.U.V. then rolls over the child, causing her fatal injuries.

Public outrage over the video spread across Weibo, the Chinese analog of Twitter. Social media users placed this latest story within the context of two recent deaths of toddlers due to mothers distracted by their phones.

The Times reported that two 2-year-old children died in separate cases in August 2015 and last April.
