TREASURE ISLAND, Florida - Treasure Island city officials are moving forward with a beach alcohol ban.
The City Commission voted unanimously Tuesday night for the proposal, which they modified. The original ordinance included all public beaches in Treasure Island. The approved one however applies only to Sunset Beach, where city officials said drinking is getting out of hand and causing problems.
The ordinance would ban alcohol weekends from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m, including holidays.
Dozens of people showed up to Tuesday's meeting, speaking out either for or against the ban. Those against it argued that it's unfair to punish responsible drinkers. Some even believe it would hurt business owners. Residents for the ban said the drinking is effecting their quality of life and causes fights and inappropriate behavior in their neighborhoods.
There will be a second reading of the ordinance at the next city commission meeting in two weeks. If passed, it will go into effect immediately.
