ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. (CBS Tampa) - Four men wearing SpongeBob SquarePants masks have been nabbed by Florida authorities for armed robbery.
Orange County detectives say the suspects armed themselves with AK-47s and wore masks of the cartoon character as they went on a crime spree spanning two counties.
They have been identified as Gabriel Alberto Aviles, 21 , Miguel Andres Lopez-Vazquez, 22, Luis Manuel O'Neil-Rodriguez, 21, and Gary Emmanuel Alvelo-Aponte, 21.
According to an Orange County press release, the suspects obtained up to $40,000 throughout four robberies in that county. Police say the suspects then used the money they obtained to purchase a vehicle, motorcycle, and a scooter.
Police add that the suspects were also responsible for four other armed robberies in Osceola County.
The four were arrested on Oct. 11 when they entered an Orange County Best Vacation Inn.
They have been charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault and grand theft.
