LINTHICUM, Md. (WJZ) - Police say a man is facing charges after trying to board a plane at Baltimore/Washington International-Thurgood Marshall Airport with a gun inside his carry-on bag.

Transportation Security Administration agents alerted officers, after checking 60-year-old Michael Menlo Smith's carry-on bag and finding the weapon inside.

Police say Smith was carrying a loaded 9 mm Glock 17.  He was also carrying two additional magazines, each containing 10 rounds.

Smith was trying to take the weapon onto a flight bound for Tampa, Florida. A spokesperson from the TSA says he is from Palm Harbor.

Police confiscated the firearm and arrested Smith before he could board the flight. Officials tell 10 News that Smith claimed he forgot the gun was in his bag.

Although the airport allows certain weapons to be transported in checked luggage, weapons are not allowed in carry-on bags for any reason.
