AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Troy Lacey knows all about race cars. He's driven stock cars and fixes them as a mechanic. "It's got the quick-change rear end," he says of a friend's car in his shop.

Troy's wife, Stephanie, and his 13-year-old daughter, Summer, have also raced go-karts and cars. They all think it's fun and safe.

"I understand freak accidents," says Troy. "But as long as you buckle them in and you're safe, I don't see why a kid shouldn't race."

"It's fun," says Summer, wearing an 'I Love Racing' necklace. "Sometimes you have to be careful not to wreck. You have to be responsible."

But tonight the Lacey's thoughts are also with another racing family. 12-year-old Tyler Morr was severely injured Saturday night at Auburndale Speedway. He was in a Kids Club race when he smashed into a wall. 

On Monday evening, All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg did not release any information about Morr. A hospital spokesperson says the family did not want to comment or talk to reporters.

The Laceys were about to head to the track on Saturday when they heard about the crash. "It was a shock. We were in shock," Stephanie says.

Troy has asked people at his church to pray for Morr.

The Lacey family hopes the crash doesn't stop kids' racing at the Auburndale track or others in the area. They say the sport teaches discipline, responsibility, and safety.

Reached by phone late Monday afternoon, track owner Rex Guy declined to comment on the crash.
