NORTH PORT, Florida - The National Weather Service confirmed that a tornado ripped through southern Sarasota County Thursday evening.
A preliminary report states the EF-0 twister lasted only two minutes, but damaged 17 homes during its 0.4 mile trek across North Port.
No injuries or fatalities were reported, but city officials say a roof was ripped off a home on Talbrook Road.

The majority of the damage was concentrated along a several block swath within the Highland Ridge neighborhood. There was also minor damage to a roof within the nearby Holiday Park Mobile Home Community.
A Sheriff's Office helicopter surveyed the damage from the air, while North Port Police searched for any additional problems on the ground.
Several residents tell 10 News they saw a funnel cloud right around 6:30 Thursday evening.
