Kenneth City, Florida - A Bay Area woman spoke out for the first time, after a car crashed into her children while they were being pushed by their grandfather.
Christina Torres said she considers her father, Francisco Torres Jr., a hero. He apparently jumped in front of the stroller to try to protect them, and took the brunt of the injuries.
The grandfather remains in the hospital with injuries, including a brain injury and broken ribs.
According to Pinellas Park Police, a driver ran the red light going northbound along US 19 at 66th Avenue North on June 29.
That woman hit another vehicle, which slammed into Torres and his grandchildren crossing the intersection.
Christina's three-year-old son, L.J., suffered road rash, bumps, and bruises.
Her 10-month-old daughter, Jaycea, suffered road rash and two broken legs.
Both have gotten better.
Thursday, Jaycea also got one of her casts off. The mother said now, her son is terrified of moving cars, doesn't like crossing streets and has nightmares.
Christina said because of his injuries, her father doesn't remember the crash. But she will never forget it.
"He's amazing. He's such an amazing person. And there's just no way I can thank him enough. He saved my kids lives," said the mother.
The woman who caused the crash will only be charged with running a red light, which is not criminal.
Police said that's because no one died and the driver was not impaired.
