GULFPORT, Fla. - Gulfport police are asking for the public's help to find a serial arsonist who they say set more than 30 fires throughout the city since May 2007. In 2012, there have been 10 fires set so far.
According to authorities, the arsonist has used the same method of setting palm trees or brush on fire in alleys near wooden fences overnight. In one of the latest fires that happened nine days ago, detectives said a palm tree was scorched and a power transformer was burned up along the 5700 block of Gulfport Blvd. It caused more than $20,000 in damages and the flames came dangerously close to an apartment building and other homes.
Investigators believe the fires are getting worse and want to get the word out again. They have put information out several times throughout the years, but have not caught the arsonist. So far, the fires have not caused major damage or any injuries, but authorities want the arsonist caught before it does.
Police are asking everyone to pay attention to alleys and report anything suspicious. If you have any information, call Crime Stoppers at 1800-873-TIPS.
