BROOKSVILLE, FL- The grandmother of Connecticut school shooting suspect Adam Lanza lives right here in the Tampa Bay area.
The Associated Press is reporting 78-year-old Dorothy Champion is a resident of Brooksville.
The manager of Champion's mobile home park on US 41 would not allow media onto the property Friday evening and a Hernando County Sheriff's Deputy was posted at the front entrance.
10 News also tried calling Champion's home phone but got no answer. A reporter for the AP did however manage to get though and says Champion said in a shaky voice "I just don't know and I can't make a comment right now," before she started to cry and hung up.
The shooting has affected people in every corner of the country including right here in Brooksville. A flag at the mobile home park's front entrance is flying at half staff, but residents say they had no idea there was this type connection to Friday morning's horrible shooting.
"I'm very sorry for her," said Champion's neighbor Linda Weinstein. "I feel bad for her because she probably had no control over it and it happened in Connecticut."
Weinstein says she spent most of the day in tears before even learning of her neighbor's close connection.
"It's unbelievable. Those kids didn't have a chance to even make it in life. It affected me bad, because I have two grandkids in school," said Weinstein.
"It's like you're helpless and you want to hold those people who lost those kids and you can't."
