Palmetto, Florida -- The pilot of an ultralight aircraft was killed after crashing on New Year's Eve.
The Manatee County Sheriff's Office says the homemade ultralight plane went down in the heavily wooded area in the northern part of the county, off Buckeye and Grass Farm roads near Palmetto.
The crash happened shortly after 4:30 Monday afternoon.

Some people in a cattle pasture told investigators they saw the plane drop to the ground. The sheriff's office says the plane took off from Airport Manatee, a short distance away from the crash site, on Hwy 41.
The identity of the man killed has not been released at this time.
The Federal Aviation Administration is not investigating, because the aircraft was a homemade experimental ultralight.
