New Orleans, LA-- The Baltimore Ravens beat the San Francisco 49ers 34-31 in the Super Bowl.
San Francisco nearly pulled off a comeback, on fourth and five with 1:50 to play when Colin Kaepernick threw a lob pass in to the endzone, but Michael Crabtree was unable to make the catch.
The 49ers wide receiver appeared to be held when coming off the line of scrmmage preventing Crabrtree from catching the ball.
On the Ravens ensueing drive, punter Sam Koch eliminated 7 of the final 11 seconds left in the game, taking his time to scoot out of the endzone for a safety, pulling the 49ers with in 3.
San Francisco's final chance to score ended as time expired when Ted Ginn's punt return was corraled around midfield.
The Baltimore Ravens had led 28-23, after the first 3 quarters.
Jacoby Jones opened the second half, with a 108-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. That tied the record for longest KO return for a touchdown...
With 13:22 left in the 3rd quarter, half the stadium lights went out. That caused a 35-minute delay in the game, before the power came back and the lights were working.
In the meantime, the 49ers seized the momentum. Colin Kaepernick connected with Michael Crabtree on a 31-yard touchdown, that closed the gap to 28-13.
After a sack and a Ted Ginn punt return, Frank Gore ran in for a 6-yard touchdown that made it a 28-20 touchdown.
The 49ers' Terrell Brown forced a fumble, recovered, and David Akers kicked a 34-yard field goal. 28-23 Ravens.
Joe Flacco is shredding the 49ers' defense. He's 13 of 20 passing, for 192 yards, and 3 touchdowns in the first half. Anquan Boldin, Dennis Pitta, and Jacoby Jones have caught the TD passes. Jones' score went for 56 yards.
The Ravens' defense has forced 2 turnovers, a LaMichael James fumble, and a Colin Kaepernick interception.
The 49ers have been held to 182 yards of total offense, and are 1 for 5 on third down.
On the Ravens first drive, they converted when Joe Flacco hit Anquan Boldin on a 13-yard touchdown pass, to make it 7-0. It capped a 6-play, 51-yard drive.
The 49ers moved the ball on their next possession, down to the 8-yard line. But the drive stalled, and David Akers kicked a 36-yard field goal. Ravens, 7-3.
Ed Reed of the Ravens has left the game with a leg injury.
