Armani Pierce went missing near the Temple Crest playground on 37th Street North Tuesday, August 13, 2013. His body was found in the Hillsborough River the next day.
TAMPA, Florida -- A memorial was held for a toddler whose body was discovered in the Hillsborough River on Wednesday morning.
Roughly 200 people attended the event at Temple Crest Park, the location where Armani Pierce's body was discovered.
"I just appreciate the support, the love and being here with us in our time and our loss," said Alicia Sanders, the toddler's mother.
Those who attended prayed, lit candles, and signed a poster with the 2-year-old's name on it, while remembering the happier times in the child's short life.
"He (was) really funny and caring and loving. He would say little phrases that would always, like, stick with us," said Jasmine Gued, Armani's cousin.
Armani vanished from his mom's sight on Tuesday night while at his older brother's football practice. The boy somehow made it into the Hillsborough River and drowned.
Family, friends, the Tampa Police Department, and other agencies launched a massive search that lasted into the night, but just before sunrise this morning his body was found in the murky waters of the river.
The family is still working on funeral arrangements for the toddler.
