17-year-old wrestler Frank Victor Vasquez of Lutz died in a car crash Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013. His passenger, Kaylee Baer, remains in serious condition.
Wesley Chapel, Florida - The Florida Highway Patrol says 17-year-old Frank Victor Vasquez of Lutz died of injuries he received in a car crash.
It happened Saturday morning around 12:30 a.m.
along Sunlake Boulevard just north of County Line Road in Pasco County.
Friends say Vasquez was a wrestler at Steinbrenner High School in Lutz, where hundreds of students gathered Sunday night for a candlelight vigil the wrestling team organized in his honor.
Vazquez had a passenger in his 2003 Nissan SUV, 16-year-old Kaylee Baer. She is also from Lutz and was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital where she remains in serious condition.
Friends say Vazquez and Baer were a couple.
Oliver Lack says, "Frank was the most loving, nice, funny, hilarious, just all around good guy with the biggest heart. He was an exceptional wrestler and was dedicated to his craft. He was loved by many because he always gave people his love and made them laugh and smile. I love Frank very much and will miss him dearly."
Troopers were originally investigating the crash as a hit and run. But at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, they say Matthew West turned himself in at the Pasco County Jail. They say he identified himself as the driver involved in the crash.
Investigators say West slammed into Vasquez's SUV, which was parked at the end of a dead end street. The impact caused the high school student's vehicle to overturn onto its right side. They say West took off initially, but did turn himself in later the same day.
Investigators say at this time no charges have been filed and the crash remains under investigation.
Meanwhile Steve Hegarty, a spokesman for the Hillsborough County School District, says grief counselors will be at Steinbrenner High School to help students struggling to cope with the loss.
