St. Petersburg, Florida -- A teenager has turned himself in after police say he accidentally shot his 13-year-old cousin on Tuesday afternoon.
The 14-year-old was interviewed by detectives early Wednesday morning, before he was released back into his family's custody.
Investigators say the teen was apparently trying to unload a gun in the bathroom when it accidentally discharged, going through a wall and hitting Danajha Jackson in the chest.
The girl's mother told officials she was in the kitchen when she heard the gun go off and found her daughter with a gunshot wound.
After gathering everyone into her car to drive Danajha to All Children's Hospital for treatment, the mother was reportedly involved in a minor hit-and-run accident. Officials are investigating that incident as well.
Once at the hospital, officials say the cousin separated from the family.
"As soon as the doors open, the kid bolted. He ran over toward Bayfront over here. He went through the bushes and he just disappeared," said witness Chris Farley.
Officials put All Children's Hospital on lockdown in an effort to find him.
"Within a hour it was over, we were back open, and it was just affecting our front entrance and our emergency area. We were still accepting patients the whole time," said Ron Adams, spokesperson for All Children's Hospital.
Danajha underwent surgery Tuesday evening. Police say she's expected to survive her injuries.
Investigators are not sure how her cousin got the gun, which has not yet been recovered.
No charges have been filed yet, but detectives will be consulting with the State Attorney's Office.
