Veterans Expressway going cashless this weekend

Tampa, Florida -- This will be your last day to pay with cold hard cash at tolls on the Veterans Expressway.

Starting tonight at 9 p.m., Veterans Expressway is set to be converted to all-electronic tolling in just about a day.

Florida Department of Transportation officials say overnight detours will continue through the end of the month as more work is done, but starting this Saturday, you'll be able to drive through the Anderson toll plaza without stopping or waiting in line.

It's part of a $380,000,000 project to eventually widen the Veterans Expressway.

Christa Deason, Florida's Turnpike Enterprise: "We'll be closing the windows that accept cash, removing the cash boxes, and as the customers proceed through the "Sunpass Only" lane they should be careful to pay attention to the posted speed limit and not stop looking for baskets or personnel or instructions to be out there.

The complete removal of these cash toll plazas is expected to take several months. If you're without a sunpass, a bill will be mailed to your home through the TOLL-BY-PLATE System with a $2.50 administrative surcharge per invoice.

On Friday night, June 13, northbound drivers should be alert for an overnight detour, beginning at Midnight, between Waters Avenue and Gunn Highway. On Saturday night, June 14, southbound drivers should be alert for an overnight detour between Gunn Highway and Waters Avenue beginning at 9 p.m.
