Uber driver, passenger hurt in crash

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. -- An Uber driver and his passenger were seriously injured in a two-car crash on 4th Street North in St. Petersburg overnight Saturday.

St. Petersburg Police reported that Uber driver Robert J. Marthaller, 38, picked up passenger Gary Bruce Jr, 30, from the driveway of the J. Wags bar at 2312 4th St. N. around 1:13 a.m.

Marthaller then attempted to make a u-turn to return northbound on 4th Street but traveled into the oncoming path of a Ford Mustang driven by Timothy G. Kane, 25.

The Ford, which was in the median lane, collided with the driver's side of Marthaller's Chevrolet Cruze.

Marthaller has life-threatening injuries and passenger Bruce Jr., 30, was seriously injured. They were taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg for treatment.

Kane and passenger Tyler J. Browne, 27, suffered minor injuries and were treated and released at the scene.

According to Uber's website, there is a $1-million dollar liability policy in place.  That is several times a typical liability policy for taxi cabs.
