Uber driver dies after weekend crash in St. Pete

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. -- An Uber driver has died after a weekend crash in St. Petersburg.

Robert J. Marthaller, 38, died of his injuries Tuesday at Bayfront Medical Center, St. Petersburg police said.

Marthaller picked up  passenger, Gary Bruce Jr., 30, from the driveway of the J. Wags bar at 2312 4th St. N. around 1:13 a.m., police said. Marthaller then attempted to make a u-turn to return northbound on 4th Street but traveled into the oncoming path of a Ford Mustang driven by Timothy G. Kane, 25.

The Ford, which was in the median lane, collided with the driver's side of Marthaller's Chevrolet Cruze.

Bruce Jr., 30, was seriously injured and also taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg for treatment. His condition was not available.

Kane and passenger Tyler J. Browne, 27, suffered minor injuries and were treated and released at the scene.

According to Uber's website, there is a $1-million dollar liability policy in place.  That is several times a typical liability policy for taxi cabs.
