VIDEO | Florida officer dragged as body cam rolls

The Pembroke Pines officer found two people asleep in a car and when the driver woke up, he took off.

PEMPROKE PINES, Fla. -- There’s terrifying body cam video out of south Florida showing an officer getting dragged by the driver of a car as that officer was responding to a call of a drug overdose.

It happened in Pembroke Pines. The responding officer noticed two people passed out in a car.  When he tapped on the window, the driver, identified as Thomas Cabrera, 38, woke up and put the car into gear.

The officer tried to stop him by reaching in to grab the keys, but Cabrera took off.

The officer’s body cam was recorded as he was dragged for about a half mile by Cabrera before falling off.

Cabrera kept going to I-75, where he led police on a chase.  The chase weaved its way to I-95, where police were able to arrest Cabrera.  The car’s passenger was also taken into custody.

The officer was taken to the hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.  He’s expected to make a full recovery.
