Fort Myers, Florida (News-Press) -- Jets were seen flying in loops over Southwest Florida Thursday morning, leaving large contrails that created a buzz throughout the Fort Myers area.

The mystery was solved when the Federal Aviation Administration said the jets were merely performing test flights.

In a statement to the Fort Myers News-Press, FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said the flight tests were meant to ensure radar coverage was strong within a 60-nautical-mile radius of Fort Myers.

"There is no problem with radar coverage, we're just testing it along the west coast of Florida at 24,000 feet and higher," Bergen said.

More flight tests can be expected in the area through June 1, on weekdays between 6 and 11 a.m., weather permitting.
