(USA TODAY) - An Egyptian couple has been arrested after attempting to smuggle their baby in carry-on luggage as they tried to enter the United Arab Emirates over the weekend, ABC News is reporting.
The couple, said to be in their mid-30s, zipped their infant son son into the bag and attempted to sneak him past security at Sharjah International Airport on Saturday after being told by customs officials they could not enter the UAE because their son lacked a Visa , ABC reports.
Bags are typically screened upon entry into the UAE, according to ABC.
A security employee spotted the baby, described in reports as being between 5 months old and 1-year-old, as the bag rolled through the X-ray scanner, ABC reports.
"When customs officials saw the baby inside the bag at the X-ray scanner, they were stunned," an unnamed police official tells Gulf News. "This machine is very dangerous for anyone, let alone a baby in a bag to pass through."
