ASSUMPTION PARISH, La. (WWL) -- A New Orleans-area man is in the Assumption
Parish jail for allegedly breaking into a church Sunday. Authorities
were tipped off when the church bells, normally used for funeral
services, began playing Sunday evening, according to the Assumption
Parish Sheriff's Office.
The resident priest for St. Philomena Catholic Church on Convent
Street called 911 Sunday around 9:30 p.m. The priest, who lives next to
the church, reported that the church bells had been activated, according
to sheriff's office.
"Officers arrived on scene and made entry into the church and
discovered a man who had taken his shoes off and was drinking. He later
stated that he was getting ready to play the piano just before deputies
arrived. He also indicated that he activated the church bells after
making entry," said a statement from the sheriff's office.
Deputies arrested Hamid Banisaaid, 32. He was booked in the
Assumption Parish Detention Center and charged with simple burglary of a
religious building, according to the sheriff's office.
