Shelby Buster says a clerk at rue21 said the teen was 'too big' to shop at the store.
Eugene, Ore. (CNN) - An Oregon teenager says a birthday trip to the mall ended with disrespect because of her appearance. Now the store says they are trying to figure out what happened.
14-year-old Shelby Buster says she and her friends went to the rue21 clothing store and received a birthday surprise she never expected.
"I walked in and the lady at the front counter said, 'Hey you're too big to be in this store, I need you to leave.'"
Shelby says her friend was already in the back of the store at this point, looking at perfume.
"So she checked out and we walked back, and my mom came back to talk to them and they were like, 'Oh, we're so sorry!'"
The rue21 district manager told CNN partner KEZI they are aware of the situation and are currently looking into it. The district manager also said the store is pulling video footage from Saturday afternoon to try to figure out what happened.
"This made no sense to me," says Shelby. "They should just have more respect, just to refrain from insulting people like me and stuff."
Rue21 told KEZI the company does not tolerate discrimination. But both Shelby and her mom were still waiting for a response, so the two are now turning to Facebook to spread the word on this traumatizing birthday experience.
