WEST PALM BEACH, Florida (AP) -- Maybe he should have taken a downtown train. But instead Donald Michael Smith stole a sports car belonging to singer Rod Stewart.
Smith pleaded guilty yesterday to stealing Stewart's Dodge Viper. He also pleaded guilty to burglary and attempted burglary for a separate incident in which he choked his neighbor and held her at gunpoint.
Palm Beach County Circuit Judge Jack Cook sentenced Smith to 11 years in prison Wednesday and ordered him to complete drug treatment when he gets out. Smith's lawyer says he was binging on cocaine and Xanax.
Smith had worked as a landscaper at Stewart's Palm Beach home. But he was fired from loafing.
The car was found hours later abandoned and damaged.
