PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN 6) – A Portland cop is getting free coffee from a user of theonline community Reddit after reuniting him with his bike.
Portland Police Bureau Officer Dave Baer said he attempted to stop a cyclist he saw peering into cars near 14th Avenue and Knott St. in Northeast Portland.
After attempting to stop the man, he gave chase via car as the suspect took off on his bike. Eventually, the suspect in question abandoned the bike and ran away on foot.
Baer's next instinct was right – he presumed the bike was stolen. Baer posted a photo of the bike to Reddit, and within hours received dozens of replies, one of which was from the bike's owner, Pete Jacobs.
Jacobs said he went to jump on his bike Friday morning and found it was missing. He went on Reddit Portland to see if anyone had found it, and the first story of the day was Baer's post, he said.
"I've had a couple other bikes stolen and you really never think your're gonna get them back," he said.
Meanwhile, Baer didn't expect the Reddit mechanism to work when he first posted the photo. "I woke up to a text from one of my colleagues saying 'hey, your Reddit thread is blowing up,'" said Baer.
"This is my bike!!! I am so happy. Officer Baer, Drinks or coffee are on me. And proof once again that Reddit is incredible," Jacobs wrote on Reddit. The bike was successfully reunited with Jacobs Friday night, Portland Police said.
"I felt like a kid again getting my bike back," Jacobs said. He said he's grateful Baer went the extra mile to bring his bike back.
"He just happened to roll down the street at 4:00 a.m. and saw a guy sitting on my bike," he said.
Aside from using the online forum Reddit, anyone who finds what they believe may be a stolen bike can register it on bikeportland.org's stolen bike registry.
