MINNEAPOLIS (CBSNews.com) - A Minnesota man is in jail because he forgot to log off his Facebook page.
Police told CBS Affiliate WCCO that 26-year-old Nicholas Wig burglarized a house on June 19 and checked his profile while inside the house. Officers said Wig forgot to log off and that along with some cleverness by the homeowner, led to his arrest.
The homeowner, James Wood told WCCO that Wig has to be the "world's dumbest criminal."
Wood told the station, he came home and saw that his house had been ransacked and his credit cards, cash and watch were all gone. The alleged thief left a pair of Nike tennis shoes, jeans and a belt, that were all wet, probably because it was raining the day of the break-in. After noticing that Wig hadn't logged off his Facebook page on Wood's computer, Wood said he posted to Facebook using Wig's profile.
Wood said he posted that Wig had burglarized his home and gave out his personal cell phone number to see if someone would call with information about the suspect. That's when the unthinkable happened, Wood said Wig texted him later that day.
He said Wig agreed to meet him to exchange items he left at the house for items he took from Wood's home. Wood's contacted police when he saw Wig walking along the street wearing his watch. Police arrested Wig at the scene.
Investigators say Wig could get up to 10 years in prison and $20,000 in fines if convicted, and that the case is very unusual.
