Woman killed in U.S. 301 crash

A 71-year-old woman died Wednesday in a single-vehicle crash, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

About 5:56 p.m., a 2009 Ford Focus driven by Allie Mae Preston, 71, of Riverview was headed southbound on U.S. 301 north of Dawns Light Drive when another vehicle entered the roadway. Preston steered left to avoid a collision and lost control of the vehicle, FHP said.

The Ford went across the median, across all northbound lanes and entered the east shoulder of the road, where it struck a fence then a tree.

Preston was taken to Tampa General Hospital, where she died.

No charges have been filed, FHP said.
