Tampa, Florida -- It's a platform that Republicans and Democrats can agree on. They can paint over their differences and carve out unity for a cause they care deeply about.
"Why don't we throw politics out the window and help a military veteran?" asks Ryan Ostrom, Chief Marketing Officer of the tool brand Craftsman.
That's what convention delegates and other volunteers were doing in downtown Tampa Monday with help from Ty Pennington, the host of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.
"[Republicans and Democrats] may not be able to agree on too much, but I think we can all agree that giving back to deserving military families is something we should all be doing," says Pennington.
All day, Republican delegates from Alaska, New Jersey, Missouri, Wisconsin, and Washington, D.C. were working on painting, flooring, lighting, and everything else needed on half of a house.
On Tuesday, that half will be loaded onto a tractor trailer and taken to Charlotte, North Carolina where Democratic delegates will complete the other half during the Democratic National Convention. The sides will literally be brought together on Election Day, and the house will be donated to a servicemember returning from war.
"Supporting our veterans isn't about Republican or Democrat, right, left, red or blue," says Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, who helped install cabinet doors inside the house. "It's really red, white, and blue."
That's why teamwork and crossing the political aisle here means so much.
"I was a medic in Vietnam," says Jim Byrnes, an honorary delegate from New Jersey. "[Soldiers] are coming back with wounds now like we've never seen before and they need help and their families need help. It's the least we can do."
A family has not been chosen for the house yet. Rebuilding Together and Sears Heroes at Home will help decide on a family in the Charlotte area.
