St. Petersburg, Florida -- The Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections says it mistakenly called voters Tuesday morning, telling them they have until Wednesday evening to cast their ballot.
Polls actually close Tuesday at 7 p.m.
It's not entirely clear how many people got the calls, which were reportedly sent out between 8 and 8:30 a.m. Pinellas election officials say the number of calls could be in the hundreds or up to 12,000 people.
The Supervisor of Elections office claims the automated calls were actually meant to go out Monday and that a "computer glitch" sent them on Tuesday instead. They feature a person's voice saying the county would be accepting ballots "through 7 p.m. tomorrow."
10 News viewer Carlos Ruiz sent us a recording of the message that was left on his phone.
The message, which he received at 8:14 a.m., says the following: "This is from your Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections. The general election is tomorrow. If you want to vote and return your mail ballot, please take it to any ballot drop-off site by 7 p.m. tomorrow. If you decide to vote at your polling place, please bring your mail ballot with you to be canceled and you can avoid delays. Thank you for doing your part by voting in this election."
Nancy Whitlock, spokeswoman for the county's Supervisor of Elections, says a second message has since gone out, telling voters to disregard the previous call.
"We stopped the calls immediately. They were going for 30 minutes. We realized 12,000 people receive the calls today," Whitlock said.
At least one Bay area politician has weighed in on the issue. Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn tweeted, "This Supervisor of Elections should be fired at the next election."
Among those who received the call: former Gov. Charlie Crist's wife.
