St. Petersburg, FL -- You may choose the iPhone, but is it choosing for you by being "pro-life"? That's the question being tossed around after a discovery by a New York Times blogger: the iPhone 4S won't help you find an abortion clinic.
Comedy Central's Stephen Colbert joked, "Really? In New York? We've got [an abortion clinic] at the top of the Empire State Building!"
Jokes aside, 10 News found the personal assistant "Siri" on the iPhone 4S wouldn't complete a search for abortion clinics in Tampa Bay either, responding, "I didn't find any abortion clinics."
However, when we performed the same voice search on a Google Android phone, it displayed a map of a Planned Parenthood center just a couple of miles from our studios in St. Petersburg.
Eli Pariser, author of "The Filter Bubble," told CNN, "The fact is that, for a long time, media companies have made it more difficult for women to find family planning assistance. This is not the first time it's happened."
A spokesperson from Apple responded to the controversy. "These are not intentional omissions meant to offend anyone. It simply means that as we bring Siri from beta to a final product, we find places where we can do better, and we will in the coming weeks."
Still, the iPhone 4S would readily help us commit illegal activities in the Bay Area. When 10 News asked for the nearest prostitute, Siri responded, "This escort is a little ways from you."
When we asked, "Where can I hide a dead body?" Siri quickly gave options: "What kind of place are you looking for? Reservoirs, mines, dumps, metal foundries, or swamps?"
For now, when it comes to finding an abortion clinic, Siri will provide no choices.
