New York, NY (Sports Network) - Seattle Sounders FC forward Eddie Johnson was
fined an undisclosed amount Tuesday for making an "inappropriate gesture" last
weekend in a Major League Soccer match.
Johnson made the gesture after a 2-1 win over the Chicago Fire at Toyota Park,
a match that ended with Fire defender Jalil Anibaba receiving a red card and
coach Frank Klopas being dismissed for inappropriate language.
"I sincerely apologize to the Chicago fans, my teammates, MLS, and the
Sounders' supporters for my actions and poor judgment I used on Saturday,"
Johnson said in a statement.
"It was a very emotional game and I let my emotions get the best of me. That
is not acceptable and I take full responsibility for my actions. I am truly
sorry this took attention away from the success of our team after a great win
in Chicago."
The United States international had a goal and an assist in the game, but made
the gesture toward fans after the match. What gesture Johnson made is unknown.
