BRANDON, Fla. -- A man who was brutally beaten with a baseball bat during a road rage incident is now out of the hospital and speaking exclusively to 10 News.

Charlie Mabry has a swollen black eye, a dislocated wrist, and eight staples in his head. He says the situation started on Monday as he was driving to his computer repair job when he swerved to avoid hitting the other driver, Cheng Hsieh, whose car was partially in the roadway.

"As I started to turn, he started to flick me off and curse at me," Mabry says.

But deputies say Hsieh was angry that Mabry didn't use a turn signal. That led to the two men yelling at one another and eventually stopping their cars near Heather Lakes Blvd. and Barmere Ln. in Brandon.

"They kind of followed each other from my understanding, according to witnesses, continuing to taunt each other, talking back and forth. They then literally stopped in the middle of the road," says Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Debbie Carter.

Deputies say Hsieh then armed himself with a stun gun and a baseball bat.

"When he jumped out of the car and reached under the seat, first thing that went through my mind was I'm being shot," Mabry says. "I proceeded by doing the only thing I could think of. I hit reverse."

He backed his car into the door of Hsieh's Mercedes.

"I was just trying to defend myself," Mabry says. "I did turn around. I did do that. I'm not denying I turned around. But I never engaged with him, I never stepped foot out of my car."

Hsieh has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and Mabry may face the same charge because deputies say he slammed his car into reverse in order to hit Hsieh's car. At this point, Mabry says, he has not been interviewed by detectives or notified about potential charges.
