New Port Richey, Florida - The mother of a man arrested for allegedly having a pipe bomb is speaking out about the whole situation.
Deborah Miller said her son, Harlin Bruce Miller (known as Bruce), is not a violent person. He just needs help.
Deborah actually called police to her home Saturday after finding the bomb and other weapons in Bruce's room.
"It was a hard thing for me to do. Because I'm his mom, you know. And I love my son with all my heart. He's my world. But I had to do the right thing, and I know I did the right thing," said Deborah.
Thursday, police arrested 24-year-old Miller, after they got a tip that he had returned to his mother's house.
Deborah said her son has suffered from Bipolar Disorder practically his whole life, but isn't on medication because he can't afford it.
A few weeks ago, Deborah said she noticed he was sleeping with brass knuckles. She then found knives, axes, and the pipe bomb in his room. Deborah said the whole situation is out of character for her son.
"He's not a mean horrible person. He's not somebody that wanted to hurt anybody. I don't think he really did. I think he was scared of something."
Deborah said she took the bomb outside and called police Saturday. New Port Richey Police along with the Tampa Police Bomb Squad came out to investigate.
They taped off several blocks and evacuated a total of five homes, while they worked to take the device apart.
Deborah believes for now, her son - who she says built the bomb - is where he needs to be.
"I hate the fact that my son is in jail. But I believe that that's where he's supposed to be, cause he's going to be safe there and no one is going to get hurt," she told us.
Miller is facing a charge of Possession of an Unregistered Firearm, which is a federal charge.
