Lealman, Florida - One woman is dead following a fire in a 55-and-over condominium community in Lealman.
Authorities say the fire started shortly before 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon inside a first floor unit at the Parkside Shores complex on 54th Avenue North.
Several people driving by saw smoke pouring from the building and stopped trying to help an elderly mother rescue her daughter who was still inside.
"We saw the homeowner -- the mother or such -- throwing a pot of water at the window," says James Skilling. "So we got her away from the house and busted out all the front windows and tried to crawl in. We couldn't get in any further than halfway. And we went around to the back of the house, tried to break down the door there, couldn't get in there either."
By the time emergency crews arrived, flames were already shooting into the air.
65-year-old Phyllis Wells was pronounced dead on scene. Her mother was uninjured. A third person who tried to help was transported to the hospital for minor smoke inhalation.
Several other condo units surrounding the fire suffered smoke damage. The Red Cross is on scene assisting affected residents.
The State Fire Marshal and Pinellas County Sheriff's Office are investigating what happened but say the fire does not appear to be suspicious at this time.
