Undercover detective shoots, kills robbery suspect

St. Petersburg, Florida -- St. Petersburg Police say an undercover detective working surveillance of an area targeted by burglars shot and killed an armed robbery suspect.

It happened at about 1 this morning. St. Petersburg Police say the detective, who is not being identified due to his/her undercover assignment, was watching the area of 62nd Street North and 4th Street North when he/she saw an armed robbery in progress at the 7-11 store on 4th Street North.

The detective called for additional police officers after spotting two suspects, one armed with a long shot gun, robbing two clerks.

A second undercover detective pulled up to the scene as the suspects ran from the scene.

Police say there was a confrontation between the second undercover detective and the armed male suspect, resulting in the detective firing several rounds from his/her department issued handgun.

The male suspect died at the scene. He has been identified as 36-year-old Lamont Burgess.

The woman he was with was caught not far from the scene. Police say she is facing a felony murder charge because her co-conspirator died during the alleged crime. She is identified as 20-year-old Ebony C. Oliver. Police tell 10 News she held a knife to one of the clerk's throat during the robbery.

Police say the detective involved is 33-years-old and has been with the department since 2003.

The detective who fired the gun will be placed on paid administrative leave during the investigation, which is standard procedure.
