Tampa, Florida -- Students at Gorrie Elementary School worked on a heartwarming and head-warming project Thursday.
Each student at the South Tampa school spent time making a hat or scarf out of fleece. The hats are heading to students from Public School 114 in Queens, New York.
Gorrie Principal Marjie Sandler was a student there as a little girl. Sandy wiped out a large part of her old neighborhood and devastated the school.
Students from the school have been split up among three surviving schools in neighboring Brooklyn. Some of the children lost everything they had.
Parents at Gorrie coordinated the project through the Gorrie PTA and spoke to their students here in Tampa about how the storm impacted kids just like them.
A charitable sewing group called Happy Hands donated the fleece to make the hats -- more than 500 of them.
If you would like to support the students and staff at the devastated school, you can donate by contacting Gorrie Elementary School.
Call them at 813-276-5673 or mail a check with Sandy in the memo line to Gorrie PTA at 705 W. De Leon St., Tampa, FL 33606.
