In Carrollwod Friday night "playoff fever" was certainly in the air as the Gaither Cowboys took on Newsome in a class 7A first round match. But from the start, things did not go as planned for the home team.
In the first quarter Newsome opened things up when QB Will Worth found Matt Hines in the endzone for a 21-yard touchdown. Just a few plays later, Newsome found the endzone again on a 40-yard interception by Ricardo Rodriguez, to put the Wolves up 14-0. Before the quarter was over Newsome added a third score on a 6 yard run from Clint Carnell to make it 21-0.
In the second quarter the Wolves kept piling it on with a 24-yard field goal from Austin Cobb to make it 24-0. Then just before half, Newsome found the endzone on a 1-yard plunge from QB Will Worth to put the Wolves up 31-0 at the half.
In the third quarter Newsome picked right up were they left off with a 57-yard touchdown on a QB keeper from Will Worth to make it 38-0. But the offensive outburst didn't end there, as Newsome added yet another score on a 33-yard run from Aaron Wade.
Finally in the fourth quarter Gaither broke up the goose egg with a 5-yard run from Jalen Cochran to make it 45-7....but at this point the game was well in hand. Before the clock hit zero, Newsom added its final score of the game, on a 56-yard run from Tyler Dunfrene, as the Wolves advanced to the next round of the playoffs in 52-7 victory.
