CLEARWATER, Florida -- A 57-year-old man is dead after authorities say he was hit by a car while trying to cross the street.

The, identified as Paul Almeida of Clearwater, was attempting to cross Missouri Avenue when he was hit by a van driven by 32-year-old Andrew Drake, according to investigators. Drake told authorities he was unable to avoid hitting the man.

Almeida sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to Morton Plant Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Drake was not injured.
