CORAL SPRINGS, Florida (CBSMiami) - Twinkie the pig beat the law. The real winner, though, is 8-year-old Kason Ray, who has Down's Syndrome.

The Juliana piggy who made headlines in November got the OK from the city attorney, who said medical documentation provided by the family shows Twinkie is an emotional support animal for Kason, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports.

The Ray family is very pleased they can keep the pig.

"Although it took much longer than it should have, we are happy the city of Coral Springs finally decided to do the right thing in granting the allowance," said Kason's mother, Heather Ray.

A request for a waiver to keep Twinkie as pet was denied by the city in September. Coral Springs city code prohibits residents from keeping pigs as pets, because livestock is not allowed.

The Ray family insisted they should receive an exception because their pig provides emotional support for their Down's Syndrome son.

"We decided on a pig because his dad and brother are allergic to pet dander and pigs are non-allergenic animals. People with special needs don't always feel accepted, so a pet loves you no matter what."
