Mugs: Teachers caught breaking the law

FOLKSTON, Ga. -- A Charlton County High School math teacher facing seven counts of child sexual assault has resigned from her job.

Danita Wilson, a 32-year-old teacher at Charlton County High School, is accused of at least seven counts of alleged sexual assault on a child, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

"Due to the circumstances at hand, I am writing to inform you of my resignation from my teaching position at Charlton County High School. Please know that I am very sorry for my actions and the fact that I have let so many people down," Wilson wrote in her resignation letter.

"I am truly sorry for the negative publicity that I have brought into public education once again. I apologize for my wrong doings and hope that, in time, I can be forgiven by all."

Charlton County Schools Superintendent John Lairsey said Wilson hand-delivered her resignation letter two days after being confronted by school officials about allegations she had sex with seven students.

Lairsey said administrators from Charlton High contacted the district Monday evening and that lead the district to contact the parents of the alleged victims.

A letter from Principal Joshua M. Howard was sent home to high school students on Wednesday explaining what had happened.

"I assure you that CCHS has been and continues to be a safe place for your child to attain a high school education. Due to the nature of the allegations and student confidentiality, no further information can be divulged."

The district did provide students access to a social worker and counselors this week.

The charges against Wilson allege at least seven different students are involved, according to Stacey Carson, GBI Assistant Special Agent In Charge.

Carson said the alleged activity has been going on for more than a year. The young people involved are not all Wilson's students, but they are or were students at the school at one time.

The Charlton County School Board received a tip from an unknown source that was passed on to the Charlton County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday. At the request of the Charlton County Sheriff's Office, the GBI conducted an investigation, said Carson.

Wilson turned herself in Tuesday afternoon at the Charlton County Sheriff's Office.

On Wednesday evening, Wilson was released from jail on a $35,000 bond.

Wilson this year was named the school's Teacher of the Year.

Wilson could not be reached for comment on Thursday. A man who identified himself as the woman's brother said the family had no comment.

District Attorney Rick Currie says once the investigation is wrapped up and reviewed by his office, the case would be presented to a grand jury.

Currie says each count carries a sentence of one to 25 years in prison.

The age of consent in Georgia is 16, but does not apply to teachers because of their supervisory role with students.
