Polk County, Florida-- It was around 7:30 p.m. this past Saturday when the body of 32-year-old Keith Richardson was found lying face down in the middle of the road.
Richardson was reportedly hit by a car while riding his bike along SR 60 near Old Bartow Rd. that night, but officials say he may have intentionally caused the accident.
According to reports, Richardson was drinking after getting into an argument with his girlfriend. During a telephone conversation with his mother, he reportedly said he wanted to throw himself in front of a moving car.
Just before the crash that took his life, two other cars traveling along SR 60 reportedly had to swerve to avoid hitting him.
A short time later, officials say Richardson turned his bike around and drove toward oncoming traffic, placing himself in the direct path of a 2001 Chrysler 300 driven by 22-year-old Vonterrious Latron West of Lakeland.
Officials were able to track down West after witnesses provided the description of his car. They told deputies they saw West stop near the scene, get out of the car, check for damage, and then leave.
West reportedly cooperated during questioning, saying he knew he hit something, but thought it was an animal.
West did not appear to impaired, but because he left the scene, officials say he was arrested and charged with Leaving the Scene of a Crash Involving Death.
Deputies say West would not have been charged if he would have remained at the scene.
