Henderson elected Gulfport mayor

Gulfport, Florida - For the first time since 1991, Gulfport has a new mayor.

Sam Henderson was elected Tuesday to succeed the city's long-time head, Mike Yates, who bowed out of politics after 20 years.

Henderson, the city's vice mayor, had 1,757 votes (64.41%) compared to challenger Robert Worthington, a former city council member, who had 971 (35.59%).

Tle elections are scheduled to be certified by the County Canvassing Board on Friday.  There will be a machine recount for the Treasure Island Referendum Question 3, which tied 762-762 in unofficial returns.
