DELTONA, Florida (AP) - A Volusia County Sheriff's deputy says he was thinking of his son when he broke a window in a burning home and climbed inside to rescue a baby girl from her playpen.
The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports Deputy Byron Poteralski says his son is about the same age as the 1-year-old girl he rescued Tuesday in Deltona.
Poteralski says Samantha Holley was standing outside the burning home when she suddenly remembered her niece was still inside. A sergeant tried going through the front door, but was prevented by heavy smoke.
Meantime, Potrealski located the room the child was in and broke the window with a baton. The child was unresponsive, but he handed her to firefighters outside. She was taken to a hospital and is expected to be fine.
