Largo, Florida -- Largo Police say the home invasion suspect sought after a shootout with police late Thursday night was caught by Pinellas Sheriff's deputies.

Police tried to apprehend 19-year-old Terry Lamar James at a home on Thursday night in the 6300 block of 144th Street North. Police say James tried fleeing from the home, when he made contact with a Largo Police officer. During their brief encounter, police say both the officer and James shot at each other.

The officer was unharmed, but James got away.

During their investigation into his whereabouts, Pinellas Sheriff's detectives received a tip about where he was. They located and followed his vehicle to the Sacred Heart parking lot on 82nd Avenue and 46th Street in Pinellas Park.

James and two others then realized they were being watched and got out of the car. James ran to a residential neighborhood and was apprehended after a short foot pursuit.

During his arrest, detectives say James tried to entice them to shoot him. They tasered him and brought him safely into custody. He has been charged with two counts home invasion robbery, attempted murder on a law enforcement officer, felon in possession of a firearm, and violation of probation.

The other two people that were with him are being interviewed by detectives.

Following the shooting, the officer has been placed on administrative leave, as dictated by policy.
