Winter Haven, Florida -- Winter Haven Police are warning the public about a phone text message and recording scam that has started under the guise of CenterState Bank.
Starting August 13, customers and even non-customers from the Winter Haven branch began contacting the bank regarding messages received on their phone. These messages stated that their account had been compromised and the customer needed to contact a specific number immediately.
However, CenterState Bank is in no way connected to the text messages or calls going out to the customers and non-customers.
Unfortunately, one customer did call the number and proceeded to give the information to the scam artists. The customer then followed up at the bank branch to find out the calls were not legitimate and the bank immediately assisted the customer in closing their account.
Police have advice for anyone who receives calls or text messages from any banking institution:
- Ignore any of these calls or text messages
- Do not respond or call back
- If you do respond do NOT give any information over the phone unless it is verified by the local bank branch.
Anyone who has responded to these messages should immediately contact their local bank branch.
